Ladies' 18 Hole October Medal
Competition Report
How Lucy White Won
Lucy White took first place with a net 81 (+8), the only card returned on a day when wind gusted to 43 mph and 18.6 mm of rain fell on a field reduced to one from a usual turnout of three. Her round was a steady battle in brutal conditions — +2 through the opening six, a difficult stretch through holes 8-12 where she dropped four shots, and a +2 finish over the closing six — and her gross 92 matched exactly what the 6-12 handicap group averaged on the day, well above their 88.6 season norm. In a net competition judged against handicap, she came home eight over her mark on a day when the course plainly played harder than usual, and with no other competitor completing a card, the win was hers.
How the course played
Harder than usual, in a 14 mph average wind gusting to 43 mph and 19 mm of rain. Turnout was down: 1 players, where a Saturday ladies' competition here usually draws 3. Every handicap group averaged above its season figure — about 3 shots for the 6-12 group. 10 of 18 holes played harder than usual and 6 easier. The harder holes cost the average player about 6 shots between them and the easier ones gave back about 3 shots. Holes 8, 9, 14 and 15 played significantly harder than usual: the 8th averaged 6.0 against a usual 5.1, the 9th averaged 6.0 against a usual 5.0, the 14th averaged 7.0 against a usual 5.4 and the 15th averaged 4.0 against a usual 3.5. Holes 4, 7, 13 and 17 played significantly easier than usual: the 4th averaged 6.0 against a usual 6.3, the 7th averaged 5.0 against a usual 5.6, the 13th averaged 3.0 against a usual 3.9 and the 17th averaged 5.0 against a usual 5.5. The number of players who didn't finish was normal for the course.
